Kaleidoscope & me
I first encountered a kaleidoscope at a small shop on the West Coast of America. A telescope? I picked it up almost without thinking and looked inside — and in that instant, I felt as though I'd been pulled into a universe of color, and I was completely captivated by the sight unfolding before my eyes.
From that moment on, an overwhelming urge to create welled up in me, and I became utterly absorbed in making kaleidoscopes.
Kaleidoscope-making has no end, no matter how far you go — the possibilities of the mirror system are, in effect, infinite. And it is a world of ichigo ichie (一期一会 — a once-in-a-lifetime encounter, never to be reached in quite the same way again): no view can ever be seen twice.
I have never, in my life, encountered anything that captivates me as much as this.
